In recent years the traditional outlook on mother’s day has changed from a symbol of religion to children giving their mothers handmade cards, presents or flowers.
However in the 16th Century it was considered important for religious people to return to their home or ‘mother’ church once a year. So each year in the middle of Lent, everyone would visit their ‘mother’ church this was classed as the main church or cathedral of the area. When people were to return to the ‘mother’ church became an occasion for family reunions when children mainly daughters who had been working away as domestic servants were allowed this day off to visit their mother and family. As a token of gratitude on their way home after working away the children would collect wild flowers or violets to take to the ‘mother’ church or to give to their mothers
